Collection Statement
This collection contains letters from the 1880's, addresses, and clippings from 1864-1963. Also included is a file on the Civil War when Alexander was in West Virginia Branch, U.S. Christian Commission, for the Army and Navy in 1865.
Biographical Sketch
Alexander Martin, the son of James and Janet Urquhart Martin, was born in Nairn, Scotland, January 24, 1822. While a youth, ha came with his parents to America, settling in Jefferson County, Ohio. As a self-supporting student, he entered Allegheny College, and graduated with the highest honors of his class in 1847. In 1849-51 he was stationed at Charleston, West Virginia, and in 1864-67 he had charge of Fourth Street Church, Wheeling. He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Ohio Wesleyan University, and that of Doctor of Laws from Allegheny College.
